What do (Christian) monastery dwellers wear underneath? Do they get to wear thermal underwear in cold weather, or is it all part of the suffering thing?

It depends on the climate and the Order. Franciscan robes tend to be heavier then those of the Benedictines. Most monks wear regular long trousers and a shirt under their robes, some wear short pants, t-shirts and sandals in the summer underneath.
Nuns usually wear normal undergarments under their habits.

it depends upon the time of year and upon the order.
in winter, most monastics will wear long underwear or other warm garments under the habit. others will wear simple underwear.
most often every part of the habit, under or outer, is regulated by the order with the goal of holiness and chastity. the types of garments worn will depend upon the order the monk or nun belongs to.

A tee shirt for one thing. I saw it peeking out from under the robe when I met some monks. I presume drawers too but that is none of my business.

This is a true story. My Aunt was a nun before she quit. She was also a PE teacher. Someone gave her lacy knickers…and she thought “well I might as well wear them under my habit (the nun’s clothes) as no one will know anyway”. However she was kart-wheeling in the convent garden when her robes slipped down…revealing all.

Outer wearing in uniform way differentiate them from others and under wearing makes no difference what so ever it is.
