    Gd = 86.76/157.3 = 0.552

    O = 13.24/16 = 0.8275

    Divide by smaller:

    Gd = 1.0

    O = 1.5

    Multiply by 2 to get whole integers:

    Empirical formula = Gd2O3

    Answer is A)

    1. get the mass of oxygen

    assume there is 100% of gadolinium oxide

    100g gadolinium oxide – 86.76g gadolinium = 13.24g oxygen

    2. get the mole of both emelents by multiplying the mass by the molar mass of each element

    Gd = 86.76g x 1mole/157.3g –> 0.55155mole

    O = 13.24g x 1mole/16.00g –> 0.8275mole

    3. divide the mole of both elements by dividing it by the relative number of mole(smallest mole among the two)

    Gd = 0.55155mole / 0.55155mole –> 1.00mole

    O = 0.8275mole / 0.55155mole –> 1.50moles

    4. if one of the quotients end with the decimal points of (.25 .33 .5 .75) multiply both quuotients by the smallest number possible that would make the decimal whole number or have a decimal of .9

    Gd = 1.00mole x 2 –> 2

    O = 1.50moles x 2 –> 3

    I’m not telling you the answer, but I will give you a solid tip. Find the moles of each element in the compound and divide each elements mole by the element with the least amount of moles. That gives you the E.F.
