I have a math question?

Nick is now seven times as old as Harry. In 6 years, Nick will be five times as old as Harry. How old will Harry be in 6 years?

If x represents Harry’s age now, then which of the following equations could be used to solve the problem?

5(7x + 6) = x + 6

7x = 5x + 6

7x + 6 = 5 (x + 6)

    In the first equation, x comes out to be a negative fraction. So that is definitely not the answer.

    In the second equation, solving for x gives an answer of 3. But if x = 3, then the other facts don’t work out. So the second equation is wrong too.

    For the third equation, x = 12 which means that Nick is now 84. In six years Harry will be 18 and Nick will be 90 (which is 18 x 5). This one fits all the information given.

    ANSWER: 7x + 6 = 5(x + 6)

    x = Harry now

    7x = Nick now

    7x+6 = Nick in 6 years

    x+6 = Harry in 6 years

    Nick in 6 years = 5(Harry in 6 years)

    7x+6 = 5(x+6)

    So that’s the one we want: 7x+6 = 5(x+6)
