Removing seriously stuck on fridge magnets?

I’m busy preparing our current rented flat to have an agency inspection and viewings as we are moving out, and I have come across a sticky problem!

I love having all kinds of magnets on fridge doors, but I also have a tendancy to spill EVERYTHING, notably down the front of the fridge.. I must have had over 40 magnets on there, and have managed to get all of them off, save two.

They were all quite well stuck on, but these two, wow, they are not budging. They’re thin kind of magnets, part of a fridge magnet chess set which has followed us everywhere we have lived. And they will just NOT come off!!

I have tried holding a hot, soapy sponge against them to loosen them, using turps, nail polish remover, whisky (!!) to no avail. I have managed to get parts of them off by digging under them with a sharp knife, but this is a.) scratching the fridge and b.) I have cut myself doing this.

Any ideas?? I don’t care about how much I have to destroy them to get them off, I just need them off!!

Update:

Ok tried the boiling water, it helped a little but I have been hacking way at these things so it’s just bits left on the fridge rather than whole magnet so they’re not easy to peel off…

Hammer?! The magnet (bits) are stuck to the fridge surface all the way across and are about 1.5mm thick. Fraid hammer is just going to scratch the fridge which I have done far too much of already.

WD40/olive oil haven’t tried it but will. Cos they are so firmly stuck the oil won’t seep underneath so I don’t know how effective that’ll be…

Please keep ideas coming!

Try pouring some boiling water over them using a kettle. Be CAREFUL. Then use some oven gloves to try to pull them off.

The difference in thermal expansion may help to loosen them. Plus the heat might demagnetise them a little. Sounds to me like a powerful Neodymium magnet! Or maybe its the crud you spilled that is the problem??!?!

    Edit:

OK, how about purchasing a large magnet from Maplins, one that you can get a good grip off, and using that to pull the fridge magnets off. It needs to be the right polarity otherwise it will repel the fridge magnets. It needs to be strong as well.

Alternatively, place it on the opposite side of the fridge door to repel the fridge magnet. Might work, but probably wont!

You could slide it off towards the side of the door, and then try to lever it off.

Failing all that, try a chainsaw!!!!!

I think almost certainly, as i was told sometime ago that there are compounds in the back part of the mirror that actually contain metal. I do not know it’s composites, and i have never tried this, however on a logical note this sounds like a question the asker may already know the answer to. However an interesting question all the same. Regards GA
