Whenever you see a fraction or percent with the word “of”, it means multiply. To multiply 3/5 * 35, pretend you have 35/1 written (mathematically, they’re equivalent). Multiply the numerators and denominators separately; (35*3)/(5*1) = 105/5 = 21.

First of all, in match the word “of” means “times” (multiplied by). Second, any whole number (like the 35) can be expressed as a fraction of that number over 1 (35/1).

Now you can write it as a multiplication of two fractions: 3/5 * 35/1

Multiply the two numerators, then the two denominators:

    3/5 * 35/1 = 105/5 = 21

To double check, if 21 is 3/5 of 35, then 21/3 must be 1/5. Once you find that 7 is 1/3 of 21 you can multiply it by 5 to doublecheck that it is 1/5 of 35.

The way I would do it if you had to show the work is as follows:

    35/1 x 3/5 = 105/5 = 21

You want to multiply the numerator then the denominator to get one fraction and then divide for a whole number. Hope this helps!

Here’s the way I did it at school, my teachers never taught it this way but it worked:

I would take 35 and multiply it by 3 (the numerator) and get 105.

Then I would divide 105 by 5 (the denominator) and get 21.

It always checks out. You can try it for any number like I did where you multiply the top and divide by the bottom.

3/5 of 35 is 21. 3/5 is the same thing as 0.6 so to fine 21 it is 0.6 times 35 which should give you 21!
