You are correct, he doesn’t like you – and from what you’ve said about him: lucky you. Being called a “tool” is a definite insult. The person who stated: “Think about what a tool is “an instrument that can not think by itself and is controlled by someone who can”” put it very well. Being a tool, simply put, means you are easily controlled by others, that you can’t think for yourself, and that others use you. It is a sign of disrespect and shows that he looks down upon you to view you this way. My advice?: If this guy is your friend, get new friends!

“Tools of trade are the type and amount of instruments, tools, equipment, devices and machinery as would be usually used in the normal course and scope of a person’s profession, trade or occupation without the use of additional labor.”
The tool you used to make your art, computers, pens, paper etc.

Tools of trade are the type and amount of instruments, tools, equipment, devices , knowledge, expertise, diplomas, certificates, degrees, anything used in the implementation of the trade
Courtney saying “cocky” is close to the meaning I know! “Tool” means penis in some cultures, but in a derogatory sense like, “You’re a dick.” Not kind.
Usually, when it comes to art, “tools of the trade” is referring to the mediums you use, e.g. watercolor, oil pastel, etc.
